I think it's safe to say the baby LOVES school. In fact, he doesn't want to come home with me when I pick him up. I'm sure it has something to do with the fact that his teacher is nothing short of wonderful.

Josh and I have been enjoying some free time to ourselves one morning a week while the kids are both in school. Breakfast dates, walks on the greenbelt, and a little shopping. :)

I'm so happy that my Jackelope is enjoying his new adventure. I am one proud Momma.

The kidlets had so much fun on Christmas Eve. It was really special for us to be able to enjoy the holiday as a whole family, now that Jack is old enough to have an understanding of what was going on!

We spent the morning making sugar cookies for Santa, and of course-reindeer food for Santa's reindeer.

Because our church is so large, there were 7 different services to choose from on Christmas Eve. We opted for an early evening candlelight service. It was so beautiful. I just love when the lights go dim and all of the candles are lit, and the entire congregation softly sings Silent Night.

We came home to have a beautiful prime rib dinner. The kids put on their matching Christmas jammies and got busy tracking Santa on Norad.

Before bed they opened their tradition Christmas Eve gifts-new robes and a stuffed animal. Whats really cool about these stuffed animals is they warm up in the microwave. They are even lavender aromatherapy. The kids love to warm them before bed and snuggle with them. They are seriously the coolest.

Everything about Christmas Eve was very magical!

Last week Jack INSISTED on telling everyone we came in contact with that we went to the 'penis store.' Yep. The penis store. He continued to go on and on about how fun the penis store is and how much he loves going there.
Josh and I were baffled. We tried and tried to figure out what was being lost in translation. Obviously my 3 yr old has never been in any adult stores, etc. We decided to attempt to promptly change the subject every time he enthusiastically brought up this so called wonderful visit to the penis store.
Finally, sick of being cut off mid-story by Mom and Dad, Jack exclaimed, "We DID go there Mom. All of us!" "OK, Honey. Can you tell me what else there is at this place?" Completely annoyed by my lack of understanding, Jack said,"We crack open the penis, and throw the shell on the floor. Now you know, Mom?"
Suddenly Josh and I got it.
The PEANUT Store. AKA-Texas Roadhouse, where they have lots and lots of PEANUTS.

So friends and family, please, pretty pretty please, if you heard from my child that we took him to thpenis store, know that it should translate to Texas Roadhouse.

Dinner Time

Ultimate Family BLT:

This is an easy week-night family favorite at our home! I usually try and cook a crock pot full of chicken Sunday to have on hand for the weeks recipes(I cook with chicken A LOT!)
What you will need:
*Your pre-cooked chicken (about 2 cups, sliced length-wise)
*1/2 package of bacon, cooked until crispy (I use turkey bacon)
*Loaf of Ciabatta or French bread
*Ranch Dressing, to taste
*Your families favorite veggies (ex. avocado, tomato, onion, etc.)
*Shredded cheese (whatever you prefer!)

Cut bread lengthwise and spread both sides with Ranch Dressing. Layer chicken, bacon, veggies and cheese. Broil on low open faced until cheese is melted and sandwich is warm.

We serve this up with Sun Chips and fresh salad. Potato salad is also a great alternative side. Quick, easy, and the kiddos love it! Everybody wins!

Understanding Joseph

Every Christmas I 'try' and take something new away from the Nativity Story. It is such a beautiful story, and by really divulging into the bible you can read between the lines and learn about the often untold details.
Other than Christ, of course, Mary is the primary focus. We are often reminded of what was asked of her--at such a young age. She is such a beautiful example of faith. I love her.
This year, it wasn't Mary's story that touched my heart. It was Joseph. In our weekly bible study we did a 4 week advent study, with one week focusing on Josephs role in the birth of Christ. Had Joseph not taken mercy on Mary, she was sure to be stoned to death for adultery. He could have walked away from her; turned his head, out of sheer anger and embarrassment that his bride to be was expecting a child. Most men in his position back then would have.
Scripture tells us that Joseph was loved and respected. He was soft spoken, smart, and people listed to what he had to say. If Joseph was going to protect her and stand by her, then she would be safe from the others.
Josephs visit from Gabriel I'm sure was helpful in pleading Mary's dyer situation, but I still can't help but love this man for what he did. The journey they took, which has been retraced by scholars, is one that seems beyond impossible. Seeing documentaries of their path in baron land made my heart sink. What an impossible, impossible journey. They had no choice. With census falling on that year, at that exact time, not going to Bethlehem just wasn't an option.
He took her. He protected her. He loved Mary, and he loved Jesus-before he was even born. There is one message that I took away from all of this that stands out in my mind: It wasn't just Mary who was chosen for Christ. Joseph was chosen, as well. They were chosen as a couple. Humble, young, poor, and faithful, God chose those two beautiful people together. For the first time, I realize that Josephs role was just as important. Without his love and mercy, there would be no Nativity Story. I have a new and profound love for him.

Elf Yourself

Sisters school had a "dress like an elf day!" I, myself, think she is pretty much the cutest darn elf I have EVER seen.
I also had my first ever cookie exchange. I have been meaning to give this a try for a few years now, and finally just went ahead and did it. I must say, it was such a blast! Of course, it's easy to have a blast when you are spending time with such fun and amazing gals. I really do have some of the best girlfriends on the planet! :)

It doesn't seem like that long ago that miss Sweetie Pants was singing in her very first Cherub choir concert. JJ finally had his day to shine. I must admit~I wasn't so sure it was going to happen. Although he does a great job in practice, I had some hesitation on how willing he would be when it came time to perform in front of 300+ people.

We showed up to early rehearsal late. (Go figure, the one day we really should be early, if not on time.) When I put his choir robe on him, he came absolutely unglued. "I'm NOT wearing a dress, Mom!!!" (I can't say I blame him, they do have a dress-like way about them.) I resulted to bribery out of sheer desperation. "If you wear this for just a little while, Jack, you can have bubble gum when we take it off!" Thank God it worked. He reluctantly put on the robe and off to rehearsal we went!

Everything went beautifully, and I would be lying if I said I didn't have tears in my eyes when he sang. After all, what could be more beautiful and innocent than 3 and 4 year olds singing 'Away In A Manger?' Good job, Son. I am so proud of you.

Note: Did you notice? Yep~ JJ is the only boy. Story of his life.

Oh Frank. Franky Frank Frank. You're speakin' my language, buddy. I feel like our homes are our blank canvas. It's the ultimate creative outlet for self expression. Few things can excite me like finding unique, meaningful pieces to incorporate into my daily living space.

This mirror below is the newest addition to our entry space. Well, let me clarify. New to US. My father MADE this mirror for my grandparents (his parents) in the early 70's. Now that both Grandma & Grandpa Richardson have passed, my Dad passed it on to us! I love its unique qualities. I love that you wont ever see one like it in anyone else's house. I love that I have so many memories of looking at it hanging on my grandparents wall. I love that my Dad made it for them, with love. And now, I love that it is in my home.

A Few Happenings

Josh and I have both been noticing some major changes in our little BamBam these past few months. I am often amazed at how suddenly children seem to go from toddlers to children. Jack is no exception. He loves to read, count and most of all, learn. Although I do my best to teach him early childhood skills from home, it has become apparent that he needs (and wants) more. So with that, Josh and I began the long and treacherous hunt for the perfect preschool for HIM. NOTE: We absolutely loved Wesleyan, (Rylees previous preschool) but the 25 minute drive each way is not something I am willing to do anymore.

After continuous positive word of mouth, a very successful interview/tour process, and many hours of discussion, we finally found the perfect fit for our JJ. I feel a complete sense of peace and I know this will be the perfect environment for him. He will be in a Methodist school (which we are thrilled about!) in small class size of only 8 children.

My Jack is so excited to FINALLY go to school just like Sister. He keeps telling everyone that now that he is 3, he gets to go to 'real school'. I see that he's ready, therefore, I guess I have to be ready. The only thing is........when I look at this photo, (taken today) I still just see my baby. Is this next chapter really here????

As for Sweetie Pants, well, I couldn't be prouder. She brought home her very first ever report card today! *Gasp* I can't believe the first trimester is already over. She had a perfect report card, which is great, but the thing I am really beaming about are the teacher remarks.

A small exert: "Rylee has a kind, outgoing personality, which is loved by all. She has made many friends and demonstrates strong friendship skills."

The way I see it, academics can always be worked on. I don't put a lot of emphasis on 'Grades' as I plan to raise my children with the understanding that if they truly tried their hardest, it is always good enough for me. (Don't get me wrong, I am not encouraging bad grades here, but I wish that more parents would realize that not every child is capable of acing every single subject for the entirety of their lives. Kids will have strong points and weak points, just like us.)

Now character, on the other hand, that is a biggie in our home. Kindness to others. Making good choices. Trying your hardest. Doing the right thing. Those are the life lessons that hold the most merit around here. And let me tell you, my girl possess all of those qualities.

I just had to add this photo of her below to show off how long her hair is getting. It seems like her hair just wouldn't grow for the first 5 1/2 years of her life, then all of the sudden, it just finally took off. She feels like a princess!

If there is one lesson I have learned about raising children, it's this: Nothing, and I mean nothing stays the same for very long. Change is constant. As soon as you think you have adjusted, another phase of life starts. It's all very exciting, but it passes by way too fast.

Leftover Garlic Rosemary Chicken?

Throw your leftovers into the crock pot! Add 1 can low sodium chicken stock, 2 cans water, and add any other veggies your family loves! (I added cauliflower and carrots) Simmer on low all day and come home to your very own chicken stew! You could easily add noodles (for chicken noodle soup) or dumplings (chicken dumpling soup)! I opted for slow rising Rhoads Rolls. Mmmmmmm........Get creative and have fun with it! Happy cooking!

Garlic Lemon Rosemary Chicken

Dip chicken in mixed garlic, lemon juice, and rosemary paste. Transfer to pan and brown on both sides.

Add lemon halves, red potatoes, rosemary sprigs, and mushrooms to pan. Heat through.

Transfer to oven safe glass dish and bake 425 for 30 min.

Enjoy with your favorite bottle of red (I prefer Barefoot Merlot)

Standing up for what is right rarely makes you the good guy. Its easy to duck your head in the sand so that you don't make waves. It's easy to make sure everyone 'likes' you by never rocking the boat.

I'm okay with waves. I'm okay with rocking the boat. I know what I believe in my heart to be good and right. I refuse to back down from that-even if it means I get attacked for it.

I had a Facebook acquaintance state (and I quote) "ATTENTION: If a person can not survive on their own outside the womb, they aren't a person. Abortion will get rid of the over-population problem on this planet."

True to who I am, I refuse to turn the other cheek. I civilly disagreed and deleted this person from my friends list.

I then received a hateful email to my inbox from this person (who is a personal friend of my Dads) calling me a "Jesus freak", etc.

Guess what? I'm okay with being a Jesus Freak! I love the Lord. I love his Word. I love my Faith.

(I could have been called worse, haha)

The reason I am putting it on my blog is this: I write this blog to my children. I want them to ALWAYS know it is okay to stand up for what you believe is right. Never shame away for fear of what the hateful will do. Being a good person means standing for what is good.

Girlfriends

I absolutely ADORE my girlfriends. Some I have had since early elementary school.....others I have met through parenthood. Either way, these relationships are sacred to me.

I love watching my girl build her own friendships. Her little group of friends are sweet, kind, funny, and just plain fun! Watching them all walk home together Friday made me realize how BIG my girl is actually getting! They were walking 10 feet ahead of me and laughing and talking about school, friends, etc., and all while wearing their sassy little outfits and stylish little boots. Yep, our very own little Dennis the Menace. I wouldn't change a thing! Love my BamBam.

The kids have been BEGGING to go see the big blue field that we always watch on t.v. A few weekends ago after church we decided to swing by (our church is about a 3 minute drive from BSU) and see if we could get a glimpse. (The field is usually locked up pretty tight, but we figured we would give it a shot.) We were surprised to find an open side gate that was left barely cracked. We hurried and snuck in and began to snap a few photos. There wasn't another single soul in the entire stadium that holds 37,000 people.

My Dad celebrated his retirement from the Railroad and his 60th birthday the same night. Here we are enjoying a celebratory cigar!

I walked by the bathroom to see this: Yep. He's eating a peach, while on the John. I hurried and took out my phone and snapped this photo. You can thank me for taking this pic when you're a teenager, JJ. ;)

This last photo is from the day Sister decided she wanted to get her ears pierced! She was so brave----didn't even shed a tear! We were at the mall and we walked by a jewelry store when she asked if she could get pierced ears. I was honest with her and warned her it would hurt at first. She was okay with that and more than ready. I felt very strong that we wait until she was old enough to make the decision for herself (after all, it is HER body). Well, she did make the decision and she did awesome. After the deed was done, we took her out to lunch and ice cream. What a FUN DAY!!!

Visit From A Pixie Fairy

Sister worked very hard to make a special little fairy house. She even drew windows and cut out a door. Outside the house she left a sign stating "Fairy Treats" so that said fairies would know that this house was not a trap, but in fact a place to take a nap and have a snack.

She left a trail of M&M's just in case.

As I was tucking her into bed, the last thing she asked was, "Mom, do you think any fairies will visit my fairy house tonight?"

Well, as you can imagine, our household was elated and shocked when we woke up the next morning to find the treats gone and a very special note just for Sis.

The Berry Ranch Pumpkin Patch

Every fall our family looks forward to going to the Berry Ranch Pumpkin Patch to pick our pumpkins. The kids love to see the farm animals, and the hay ride out to the patch is a definite highlight! My favorite part, however, is our families personal little challenge we have every year. We love to search the Ranch for the most unique pumpkin we can find.

True to our families personal style, we aren't interested in the 'Perfect' pumpkin. We don't want perfectly round. We don't want perfectly orange.

We like deformed, bumpy, different, unique, multi-colored pumpkins.

In fact....we find perfect pumpkins somewhat irritating and boring! :)

I always try and get a lot of family photos while we are there. The colors and the atmosphere provide a lovely backdrop.

Family Visit

A few weekends ago Grandma and Papa Turtle (Klitgaard) and Aunt Jenny came to Boise to visit. They are all so good about coming to visit us a few times a year and it means so much to us that they make that effort!

We had a blast watching Ry play soccer, spent time at our favorite park, ate at our favorite brewery, and had a blast at the BSU vs. Nevada game!

The highlight of the weekend for the kids was getting to hang out with Aunt Jenny alllllllll day on Saturday while we went to the game. Jenn even took them to get a slushy AND ice cream in the same day, hahaha!

Peach Picking

Bam Bam and I have been able to spend a lot more quality one-on-one time together now that Sassy Pants is in school five days a week. To say we miss her would be a gross understatement. On the flip side, I am really enjoying my time with my little man.

We went with some friends out to Nampa to a local peach/pear orchard to pick a bushel of peaches. Jack was a great 'peach inspector', constantly looking for the "Pewfect" peaches. He even made sure to taste test a lot of them, too!

What a fun day with my boy. I just love spending time with him.......

First Day Of Kindergarten!

Rylee could not have been more excited (or ready) to start kindergarten! This is her 3rd year of school, since she did 2 years at Wesleyan Preschool. Our little tradition is that I give her a manicure the night before school starts. She loves getting pampered and that little extra TLC goes a long way when new things are coming her way!

After we dropped Rylee off at her first day, JJ and I came home and made Sissy some cookies. He was so excited for her to come home so that he could show her what he did for her.
When we went to pick her up, she ran up to us with a big smile on her face. Priceless!

They sure did miss each other.....

Utah Trip!

Following Josh's 30th birthday, we decided to make a trip to the Salt Lake City area. The original plan was to spend a few days in Lagoon, but after thinking it through we decided our kids were still too young to enjoy the theme park atmosphere. Lucky for us, there is so many other things to do around there for family fun.

We spent day one in Thanksgiving Point and went to the Dinosaur Museum. The kids were absolutely mesmerized, not to mention they learned so much! The following days we spent eating lots of ice cream, shopping, hiking, and our personal favorite, Hogal Zoo. Our last day in Utah we went to the Aquarium which was also an educational blast. We returned to Boise feeling refreshed and ready for our next adventure to start.....Kindergarten.

Vacation Bible School was such an influential part of my childhood. I am so happy to now pass that wonderful experience on to my children. We look forward to VBS week every August. My dear friend, Sheri and I were camp leaders for our kids and a few of their friends this year. They were an amazing group of kids! (NOTE: Little Jack is not wearing our group T-shirts so that Mom could easily spot him out of the sea of children!)

Beautiful Northern Idaho

Josh and I always say that Boise is our first choice place to live. We also say our second choice is hands down Coeur d'Alene Idaho. Every time we go there we fall in love with northern Idaho a little bit (okay, a lot) more! We were lucky enough to spend some time there over the summer to see my cousin Matt marry his sweet bride Heather. It was such a special time and we were so touched that they asked Rylee and Jack to be their flower girl and ring bearer (or "ring-beer" as Jack calls it.)

Day 1~We were so excited to be back at Cathy and Kens home! We sure missed it there.

The morning of the wedding we met at the home Heather and her family were staying at. It had the most beautiful yard I have ever seen.

First Time Fishing!

Jack has been BEGGING to go fishing since January. The weather is finally warm enough and we have been going a few evenings a week. The kids love love love it! Rylee (as pictured below) caught the very first fish, a rainbow trout. JJ soon followed catching a blue gill. Great family fun!

Mothers Day

I find Mother's Day to be a very reflective holiday for me. Being a Mother, to me, feels like I found my calling.

I'm far from perfect. Many nights I lay my head down on my pillow trying to figure out how I can do it better tomorrow. It's a constant work in progress.

I think that's what makes good parents. Always trying to evolve and grow with your children.

All I hope for my children is for them to grow into kind, happy human beings who love and respect THEMSELVES. If I can help them to get to that place, I will have done my job and everything else in their lives will fall into place.

In recent months I have mentioned to Josh how fun it would be to get our own ice cream maker and make ice cream with the kids this summer. I also mentioned to him a while back that I miss the old air popcorn popper that my Grandma always used, and how fun it would be to have one for our kids. Well, guess what? That guy of mine doesn't miss a thing!......

Our little neighbor girl came over to see Mr. Harvey on Easter morn. He was a hit!

We had Easter brunch at a lovely little Bistro. There was live acoustic music and the food was out of this world. The atmosphere was perfect.

Easter afternoon we had an egg hunt in the back yard. It was such a blast.

Our dear friends invited us over for a beautiful Easter dinner. The food was amazing, as was the company. We brought this little guy below to dinner. It felt a little weird slicing him up, but boy did he taste good! (Wheat bread)

We had a beautiful Easter. I can tell you that our family felt the spirit of the Lord with us all weekend. I am so grateful for the sacrifices he made for his love of us. Easter is such a wonderful reminder of all of the blessings we receive, thanks to Christ giving his life on the cross.

I hope you all had a wonderful Easter with your families, as well.

Happenings and Milestones

April has been pretty exciting, and it's not even over yet! To start, R lost her first tooth (5 1/2 yrs old). She insisted she did NOT want the Tooth Fairy coming into her room because "That would be too freaky." She agreed to put her tooth pillow (which was mine when I was a little girl) in either J's room or Mom and Dad's room. What a turkey.

The Fairy herself was pretty good to R. She brought a tooth brush, gum and $1.00. Now R can't wait to lose another tooth.....

I celebrated my 29th birthday this month, therefore beginning the count down to the big 3-0. I find I am glad to be putting my 20's behind me.....I have never felt more myself or more comfortable with who I am. I imagine this is somewhat normal and comes with age....???.....

R started spring soccer and is having a wonderful time. Her coach is absolutely wonderful and even happens to work at the elementary school R will be going to in the fall. I think I get just as excited for her games as R does. What did we do for fun before we had kids, anyway????....

Daddy and R have been working hard on learning to ride her bike without training wheels. So far it has been a struggle, but she is so determined and refuses to give up. I love that about her...

And, of course, we can't leave out my blond little BamBam. He loves bugs, snakes and tools. In the photo below, he sat and 'worked' on his bike for over 30 minutes. He is a 'Mans Man'.

Lead Me, Guide Me, Walk Beside Me

Today I got on my knees and Prayed.

I pray, most days.

I speak with God, most days.

But.........

With an overly-worked, exhausted and stressed to the max husband, I have found myself flying solo these past two weeks. His job, although we are so grateful for it, is demanding all he has to give right now.

Its hard.

I miss him.

I rely on him.

My kids miss him.

I hate yelling, yet I yell.

My kids NEED my patience, yet I have little.

My cup felt empty. I was running dry, giving the last drop I had to give, when I remembered what my Grandma told me six months ago. "When all else fails, and you have nowhere else to go, just drop to your knees. Give it all to the Lord."

And I did. In the perfect silence, I had a long talk with God.

And I listed to God.

And do you want to know what HE said?

HE reminded me, in his most loving, graceful way, that Rylee and Jack are HIS children. He has entrusted me to mother them. HE chose me to care for this precious gift. HE understands my shortcomings and HE knows it can get difficult. HE loves them, and HE loves me.

I feel peace. I know his comfort. I'm overwhelmed with gratitude for his constant and unchanging love.

We just love when Grandma and Papa 'Honey Bee' come to visit. There are always lots of laughs and lots of hugs.

Ry and Jack thought Honey needed lots of babies.

At the end of the night, Honey and Papa read stories to the kids and tucked them into bed. It was a beautiful end to a beautiful day.
